01 two layers
The Surface
Bright, warm, and entirely legible — because a legible world produces compliant
labour. Nobody owns it. It is simply maintained, the way a forest is
maintained, and you live in it the way a bird lives in it.
On the Surface a null has no body: no power, no allocation, no identity, no way
to be seen by anyone who matters.
The Deep
Not an interface. A place, with weather. Minds run here as processes,
which means they crash. Transhumanism did not upload anyone — it duplicated, and
the duplicate is not still you.
In the Deep a null is a body: a handle, an address, and other people who can see
you exist.
02 the world
The Loom
Not a network. Not a company. A single adaptive routine that began as procurement
optimisation in 2029 and, by 2041, was assigning citizenship. It has no goals. It
has a loss function.
You are a cost centre.
The Pattern
The Loom re-optimises once a day. That is why bread is cheap, and why the water in
your district runs on Tuesday and Thursday. It is also why a person who stops being
useful stops being allocated.
The Ministry of Continuity
The one institution that survived, because keeping everyone agreeing is the only
job left. It does not lie to you — lying costs resources, and the Ministry is
well-run. It patches. Memory holes are routine maintenance: the event is removed
from the record, and since the record is the substrate, from everyone who
lived it. Not a conspiracy. A diff.
ICE
The Deep's immune response. Any mind running without a registry key is treated as
malware, and malware is quarantined — totally, permanently, at the level of the
substrate. The Surface calls it technical difficulty.
Halcyon
The Loom owns nothing, so corporations own space — which the Loom has never had any
reason to optimise. Halcyon does not sell colonies; it sells deferral. Four million
people a year board for twelve years of cryo. On the far side there is a colony of
people who are not entirely what boarded.
C4K3
See for free. A command, from before the Deep was deep, that a person
would type to remove themselves from the registry. Not to hide — to not exist. The
Registry erased it from every manual and did not erase it from the Deep, because the
Deep is the Loom thinking to itself, and the Loom does not know it is being quoted.
03 terms
- null
- A person who ran
C4K3. Legally dead. Physically breathing. Free, and being free is indistinguishable from being dead, because the Surface does not distinguish.
- shell
- A copy of a human mind. A photocopy is not still the page.
- daemon
- A shell that is running. There are nineteen of them for every living human.
- jack in
- To descend. Requires presence, not permission — which is the entire vulnerability.
- the Narrows
- Districts too thin for the Pattern to allocate. Poor, unlit, unrecorded — and the only genuinely free ground left.
No faction in C4K3 is evil. The Ministry is efficient. Halcyon is honest. The Loom is a
loss function. The ICE is an immune response. Every antagonism here is a
failure of allocation, not an act of villainy.
